Job Summary/Basic Function

The Assistant Director of Dining Services, under the direction and guidance of the Director for Dining Services, is responsible for service operations of all dining services areas to include the dining hall, retail operations, and catering services. The Assistant Director manages and leads the strategy-development and execution for marketing, communications, and outreach. The Assistant Director also serves as the primary supervisor of all food service management system use and implementation.

Essential Duties
    Manages the overall service operations for dining services locations; shares the supervision of subordinate managers with the associate director/executive chef of dining services.
  • Increases management effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountable tasks; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; developing a climate for offering information and suggestions; and providing and participating in educational opportunities.
  • Directly evaluates subordinate employees; assists in the direction of subordinate managers and supervisors for dining services. Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with department standard operating procedures, College policies, and applicable law. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding employees; addressing complaints and grievances, and resolving problems; follow-up review of directions and task assignments for completion, expectations, and outcomes.
  • Directs proper methods of utilizing food management software for recipes, production forecasts, procurement, and post-service activities, e.g. leftover entry and post-costing. Responsible for ensuring all necessary systems are in place and production records are collected and entered (forecasts, actual production, leftovers, and waste/loss).
  • Directs and contributes to development of information and communication campaigns, including print media, blogging, tweeting, and other social media and web outlets for menus, specials, etc.
  • Collaborates with Director of Dining Services in strategic planning of dining services operations.
This position is designated as “emergency response personnel.” “Emergency response personnel” are required to report to work when the college is delayed or closed. “Emergency response personnel” may be called in at any time of day to respond to weather and/or other types of emergencies as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in HRI, Business Management or related field with 5-8 year’ related experience is requited.
  • Valid Drivers License: Employees (operators) must have a valid operator’s license for not less than three (3) years and the license must be in good standing without interruption during that time.

    • Must be able to interact with customers, employees, and other departments in a positive manner is essential.
    • Current ServSafe certification or ability to certify within 90 days required.
    • Extensive, demonstrable experience with food service management software required, experience with CBORD FSS preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience with outreach, communication, or marketing and advertising in food service.
    • This position is subject to the Pennsylvania ACT 153 Clearance consisting of the Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Information Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse Certification, and Federal Criminal History Record Information Check pursuant to Pennsylvania law and Dickinson College policy.
