Job Summary/Basic Function

The Animal/Neuroscience Technician provides animal care and technical support for the Animal Facility housed in the Rector Science Complex and supports use of animals for teaching and research in the Neuroscience, Biology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology programs. The technician provides broad-based teaching and technical support to the Neuroscience Program, and assists courses in other programs that utilize animals, insects, and cell cultures.

Essential Duties:
  • Maintain Animal Facility – Monitoring animal health, cleaning, changing cages, feeding, keeping records of vivarium room conditions
  • Assisting with research projects
  • Assisting and supervising student researchers and workers in the vivarium
  • Ordering all items for the vivarium, research and classes related to Animals or Neuroscience
  • Maintain breeding colonies
  • Acquiring and disposing of animals, Teaching PSY 125 Lab, Working with the facility veterinarian, maintaining equipment
  • Check all animals on weekends and all holidays through out the year.
Other Duties
  • Diving to pick up animals or feed from suppliers.
  • Communicating with facilities management when conditions (temperature and humidity) are out of range.
  • Assisting with set-up and needs of the CTY and STEP programs.
  • Attending IACUC meetings. Attending ICSC meetings. Assisting with animal surgeries.
  • Updating research logs.
  • Completing research tasks when students and professors are out of town (weekends, holidays, summers).
  • Entering credit card statement information.
  • General housekeeping within the facility.
  • Update the Neuroscience website.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in biology, neuroscience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience working in an animal care facility at research institution

  • Valid Driver’s license. License be valid for not less than three (3) years and the license must have been in good standing without interruption during that time period.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs to shoulder height.
