Job Summary/Basic Function

The Sustainability Learning Coordinator (SLC) develops, implements and leads programs that engage Dickinson students in learning about, innovating for and practicing sustainability through experiential, project-based and place-based living laboratory projects and activities that serve the campus and the community by advancing sustainability goals. The SLC will develop student learning outcomes for living laboratory projects and activities; promote and support diversity and inclusion of participants; supervise and mentor students to support them in attaining learning outcomes; develop and implement safety protocols; and assess student learning. The SLC will also lead and coordinate collection and reporting of sustainability performance data for internal and external audiences.

Essential Duties:
  • Develop co-curricular sustainability learning outcomes; develop, implement and lead living laboratory projects and activities that support students in attaining the learning outcomes; and assess student learning.
  • Train, supervise and mentor student interns, volunteers and participants in living laboratory projects and activities, focusing on student learning.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of safety protocols and regulatory compliance for living laboratory projects and activities that adhere to high standards and are consistent with Dickinson’s risk management protocols.
  • Lead and coordinate the collection and reporting of sustainability performance data by college staff and student interns for internal and external audiences, including Dickinson’s greenhouse gas inventory and AASHE STARS report.
  • Oversee management and daily operation of living laboratory programs such as The Handlebar Bicycle Cooperative and The Hive Bee Cooperative.
  • Coordinate and improve initiatives that make Dickinson a “Bicycle Friendly University,” lead the Biking Advisory Committee, and advocate for biking and alternative transportation on campus and in the community.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor of arts or science degree.
  • One to three years of experience leading sustainability or other projects in a college or similar setting.
  • Demonstrated passion for and participation in campus or community sustainability.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring college age interns, volunteers or other workers.
  • Bike mechanic skills and experience teaching others to maintain bikes.
  • Beekeeping knowledge and skills.
  • Familiarity with college greenhouse gas inventories.
  • Familiarity with AASHE STARS reporting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills for working with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and community members.
  • Trade or DIY skills a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. License be valid for not less than three (3) years and the license must have been in good standing without interruption during that time period.
