Job Summary/Basic Function

The Assistant Director of Dining Services, under the direction and guidance of the Director for Dining Services, is responsible for personnel and service operations of all Dining Services locations to include the dining hall and retail operations; assists with direction of Catering Services as necessary. Supervises and directs the Brand Manager in strategy-development and execution of marketing, communications, and other outreach efforts. The duties are accomplished personally and through subordinate supervisors. Coordinates or directs activities such as training; employee recruiting, vetting, hiring, and scheduling; proposing updates to standard operating procedures; enforcing standard operating procedures; and assisting with execution of branding, marketing, and advertising plans. The Assistant Director assumes all responsibilities for dining services in the absence of the Director and the Executive Chef for Dining Services.

Essential Duties
  • Manages overall operations through direction of operations management and employees for Dining Services locations; and shares supervisory responsibilities of subordinate production supervisors with the Executive Chef of Dining Services.
  • Increases employee effectiveness through personal and delegated efforts by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountable tasks; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; developing a climate for offering information and suggestions; and providing and participating in educational opportunities.
  • Evaluates direct-report subordinate employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with department standard operating procedures, College policies, and applicable law. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding employees; addressing complaints and grievances, and resolving problems; and conducts follow-up reviews to measure and address direction-compliance, task assignment completion, as well as meeting expectations and desired outcomes.
  • Supports proper methods of utilizing food management software for recipes, production forecasts, procurement, and post-service activities, e.g. leftover entry and post-costing. Responsible for ensuring subordinate staff support systems and processes such as completion of production records (forecasts, “actual” production quantities, leftovers, and waste/loss).
  • Directs Brand Manager and contributes to their development of information and communication campaigns, including print, blogs, and other technology outlets using guidance from the Director and reports progress.
  • Works with departmental supervisors to ensure continuity of production throughout Dining Services.
  • Promotes harmonious relations among residents, division personnel, and persons of the university community.
This position is designated as “emergency response personnel.” “Emergency response personnel” are required to report to work when the college is delayed or closed. “Emergency response personnel” may be called in at any time of day to respond to weather and/or other types of emergencies as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in HRI, Business Management or related field with 5-8 year’ related experience required.
  • Valid Drivers License: Employees must have a valid operator’s license for not less than three (3) years and the license must be in good standing without interruption during that time.

    • Must be able to interact with customers, employees, faculty, and representatives from other departments clearly and concisely and in an effective, positive manner.
    • Current ServSafe certification or become certified within 90 days required.
    • Experience with food service management software preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience with outreach, communication, or marketing and advertising in food service.
    • This position is subject to the Pennsylvania ACT 153 Clearance consisting of the Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Information Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse Certification, and Federal Criminal History Record Information Check pursuant to Pennsylvania law and Dickinson College policy.
